Have been deploying an upgrade to an application, had a few issues with SQL report performance (Which our DBA kindly fixed) – Not the overall issue.

Testing the application, everything was working till the absolute last step, then the 500 error hits. With a generic as hell message.

Solution was..

– Open the web.config file for the IIS site.

Add: <customErrors mode=”Off”/>  (Or set it to Off it it already exists..)

– Open ‘Error Pages’ in IIS

– ‘Edit Feature Settings’

– ‘Detailed Errors’ (Then OK)

– Recycle the app

– Refresh the page.

BETTER ERROR MESSAGES.

NB: Our issue was that there was a connection to Exchange… Our test Exchange VM was turned off…
